REIMAGINE NEWSLETTER: ISSUE 31
#156 – THE PERSONAL CURRICULUM 🙋✏ 📐
Dear Reimaginers,
It begins again. 98 days after Paul Denny and his team at the University of Auckland were named 2018’s champions of educational education, the 2019/20 Reimagine Education Awards are nearly ready to open once more, offering the world’s best pedagogical pioneers the opportunity to be recognized and rewarded for their work. Stay tuned for next week’s official competition launch!
Over the last 100 days or so, your Reimagine Education Steering Committee has been working tirelessly to reimagine Reimagine. We’ve enhanced the application form to ensure that you have clearer insight about what our judges are seeking. We’ve decided to move across the pond – westward, to London, where we’re delighted to be hosting Reimagine Education in partnership with Imperial College Business School, one of the world’s leading institutions in their field. We’ve removed some award categories, and replaced them with new, better categories: ones that we believe will better capture the range of innovation that’s occurring today around the global education environment.
The first of these is proudly organized in partnership with the US Department of Defence, and stays true to Reimagine’s desire to identify pedagogies that are applicable beyond the traditional bricks-and-mortar university. The inaugural Best Online/Distributed Learning Program for Developing 21st Century Skills Award will be open to all providers of distributed learning programs with a specific focus on enhancing the employability outcomes of their students.
Other new awards are designed to capture the cutting-edge of innovation at the intersection of technology and education. They are the Artificial Intelligence Award, reflecting the pivotal role that developments in AI, machine learning, and cognitive computing will play in tomorrow’s teaching and learning; and the Science of Learning Award, designed to open the Awards up to the best research in new pedagogical theory – and the best applications thereof.
Contributions this edition come from two of last year’s best reimaginers. On International Women’s Day, we are delighted to offer a platform to Hetal Jani, Executive Director of Speak! Mentorship, an organization empowering young migrant women to achieve outstanding educational outcomes through mentorship programs.
Engaging and empowering disadvantaged learners is Jani’s mission, and it is also one shared by Barry McRaith, founder and CEO of The Purple Pen. Recognizing the perpetual problem created by low student engagement figures in self-report surveys – and their root in pedagogy focused exclusively on that which can be measured – his mission is to help transform the crisis of deficit-based education into the solution of asset-driven learning. You can find out more about his work in this article.
We’re delighted and grateful that well over 100 expert educators from across the world have opted to join our international judging panel – over double the number that had applied at this point last year! However, as the popularity and reach of Reimagine Education grows, so too does the amount of expertise required to offer all applicants a truly rigorous, specialist-led evaluation process. If you’re an expert in teaching, learning, or ways to nurture employability, submit your candidacy today!
We hope that you will help transform the world of education with us this year, and wish all our applicants the very best with this year’s Awards.
Anyone who wishes to submit an article on their work, research, product, or paper for our newsletter is, as ever, welcome to contact jack@qs.com with an 100-word summary of their proposed topic. Until then – keep innovating!
Regards,
